  • Sonet contributes 35% to Kia India's domestic volumes.
  • Over 1 lakh Sonet units shipped to nearly 70 international markets.

Kia India's sub-4 metre compact SUV, the Sonet, has crossed the domestic sales milestone of 5 lakh units since its entry into the market in September 2020. This model's popularity can be gauged from the fact that it contributes nearly 35% to the carmaker's domestic volumes.

The Kia Sonet takes on some big names like the Tata Nexon, Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Maruti Suzuki Fronx, Hyundai Venue, Mahindra XUV 3XO and Skoda Kylaq. Interestingly, it has exceeded the annual sales mark of 1 lakh units for two consecutive years, clocking 1.04 lakh units in 2025.

Kia offers SUVs like the Sonet, Syros and Seltos; MPVs like the Carens, Carens Clavis and Carnival; and electric vehicles (EVs) like the Carens Clavis EV, EV6 (electric SUV) and EV9 (electric SUV), in India.

Despite new models entering Kia's portfolio, the Sonet has been a trusted nameplate for the carmaker, recording handsome volumes every year, and doing so in a highly competitive segment.

Following the Goods and Services Tax (GST) rate rationalisation, the starting price of the Sonet dropped to Rs 7.30 lakh, with the top-spec variant retailing at Rs 14.09 lakh, both prices being ex-showroom.

There are multiple powertrain options to attract buyers with varied preferences. The vehicle has three engine options -- Smartstream G1.2-litre petrol (83PS/115Nm), Smartstream G1.0-litre T-Gdi petrol (120PS/172Nm) and 1.5-litre CRDi VGT diesel (116PS/250Nm). The 1.2 petrol unit gets a 5-speed MT, the 1.0 turbo petrol unit has 6-speed iMT and 7-speed DCT choices, and the 1.5 diesel units can be had either with a 6-speed MT or a 6-speed AT.

Like most of the Kia cars, the Sonet is feature-loaded as well. It gets LED headlamps, DRLs and connected taillamps, 16-inch alloy wheels, 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and touchscreen infotainment, surround view monitor, front ventilated seats, Bose sound system and an electric sunroof. While 15 safety features are standard, there are 25 safety features in all, including Level 1 ADAS.

The Sonet has not only performed well in the domestic market, but also tasted success overseas. Kia has shipped more than 1 lakh units of the Made-in-India Sonet to nearly 70 markets, including the MEA, Central and South America, Mexico and the APAC region.

Kia now boasts a presence with 821 touchpoints across 369 cities in India.
