New Delhi, Dec 15 (PTI) A man has been arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle in over three kgs of gold jewellery, worth about Rs 85 lakh, from the IGI airport here. According to a Customs official, Mohamed Salim Aliakbar, who hails from Karnataka, was intercepted yesterday when he was trying to walk through Green Channel (meant for declaring non-dutiable goods) in the international arrival hall. The officials seized 3215.68 gm of gold jewellery valued at Rs 84.48 lakh from Aliakbar, who had come from Dubai and tried to smuggle the same into India without payment of customs duty, an official release said today. The jewellery has been seized and Aliakbar has been arrested, it said. As per Customs Act and Foreign Trade order, an Indian passenger who has been residing abroad for over one year is allowed to bring jewellery free of duty in his bonafide baggage up to an aggregate value of Rs 10,000 (in case of a male passenger) or Rs 20,000 (in case of a lady passenger). "The passenger has informed that he was brining gold jewellery from Dubai to sale the same in India," the release said, adding that further probe is under progress. PTI AKV RAI
