While the world loves tablets and there’s a clear shift in focus from manufacturers all trying to produce new and more attractive tablets, Acer chairman seems to disagree. According to a story by Digitimes, JT Wang said that tablets were only a fad and that they would slow down soon. The focus will be on Intel’s upcoming Ultrabooks and Microsoft’s Windows 8 operating system. Acer is said to be working on Ultrabooks priced in the $799 price range, which translates to under Rs. 40,000. The launch of their first Ultrabook is likely to take place in September. This prediction may not be just a bluff as many other experts agree that tablets are designed specifically for media consumption.

Ultrabooks, the future

Once this market is fulfilled, focus will return to PCs and notebooks, which will in turn cause tablet sales to slow down. Acer isn’t the only one betting on Ultrabooks. Other PC-centric companies such as ASUS, Dell, Toshiba, Lenovo and HP are all gearing up to launch their own Ultrabooks in the last quarter of this year. Acer honcho, JT Wang also said that he didn’t expect Ultrabooks to rise to the top this year. He predicted that sales of Ultrabooks among other notebooks would rise 25 to 35 percent next year. Intel, too has predicted a similar number for the end of 2012.
