Four people have died and several others are feared trapped after an under-construction bridge collapsed in North Kolkata on Thursday. Eleven people have been rescued so far.Rescue operations are on in full swing. Firefighters and residents were trying with their bare hands to rescue those trapped under the wreckage of the metal-and-cement structure that came down near Girish Park in a teeming commercial district.Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who was in Purulia for the election campaign, is returning to the city to take stock of the situation.The incident took place near Ganesh Talkies in Girish Park. It is a crowded area in North Kolkata, which houses many commercial as well as residential buildings."The bridge collapsed before my eyes. We heard a huge commotion after the collapse. Several people, autos are taxis are buried under the debris," an eyewitness said.The bridge was due to be completed in 2010 and has missed 8 deadlines as yet. The next deadline for completion of the construction is in December 2016.The flyover, named after Vivekanda, was one of the pet projects of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee when she came to power in 2011.
