Two days on, there has been still no breakthrough in the murder of Mid Day crime reporter Jyotirmoy Dey, who was murdered in broad daylight in Mumbai on Saturday.
The police is still searching for the four motorcycle borne assailants who shot him in Powai. They have examined Dey's call records and laptop to see what stories he was working on. One of Dey's colleagues told CNN-IBN that Dey had recently received a death threat and complained to the police. Maharashtra's Home Minister RR Patil has promised action. Outraged by the incident, journalists in Mumbai have planned to hold a protest march on Monday to raise the issue of safety of reporters. Under constant threat from political groups and the mafia, journalists in the city say complaints to authorities have so far fallen on deaf ears. Senior journalist Jatin Desai said, "Dey had informally told the police officers that he knew of the threats, but nothing was done to help him." Unofficial estimates say at least 125 journalists have received threats in the state in the last few years. Last month, a female journalist from 'Zee' was attacked allegedly by a builder mafia in South Mumbai. A reporter from 'IBN Lokmat' was attacked by the oil mafia in March this year. In February Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar tried to stop cameras recording a farmer's grievance in a public meeting. In 2009 IBN Lokmat's offices were attacked by Shiv Sena workers. In 2008, veteran journalist Kumar Ketkar's house was vandalised. Journalists were also attacked by MNS supporters when Raj Thackeray was arrested. In 2007, the office of 'Star News' was ransacked. RR Patil had promised to bring a protection law in 2004 when journalist Nikhil Wagle was attacked, but seven years down the line, it remains a hollow promise. Meanwhile, under pressure from the Congress high command, the state government has promised swift action against Dey's assassins. Discover the latest Business News, Sensex, and Nifty updates.
