Commercial vehicle maker Ashok Leyland's total sales in December declined 19 percent year-on-year to 7,299 units amid continued sluggish demand for medium and heavy trucks.

Sales of its small truck Dost accelerated 88 percent to 2,069 units, last month. However, excluding that, its CV sales fell 34 percent to 5,230 units.

Over the April-Dec period, its total sales are up 21 percent to 79,990 units, primarily boosted by the Dost. Ashok Leyland has sold 23,898 units of the SCV, which competes with the likes of Tata Motors Ace, so far this financial year, compared with 2,700 units a year ago.

Excluding Dost, the country's second largest truck and bus maker's CV sales are down 12 percent to 56,092 in Apr-Dec.

Ashok Leyland is not alone. Sales of other CV makers in the country too have been hit as fleet operators delayed medium and heavy truck purchases due to the overall slowdown in the economy.

Tata Motors for  instance, saw its M&HCV sales plunge to 9,866 units from 18,247 units a year ago. Volvo Eicher Commercial Vehicle reported a 20 percent drop in total sales at 4,032 units.

Ashok Leyland shares were up 0.6 percent at Rs 27.45 on NSE in afternoon trade.
