Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a blistering attack on the Congress at the Rising Bharat Summit 2026, arguing that voters across generations have steadily rejected the party and no longer see it as a credible alternative.
Framing his criticism around what he described as a long-term decline, Modi said the electorate has been “teaching Congress a lesson over the last four decades”. “This has been happening since 1984, Congress has been losing vote share since,” he said, adding that “Congress’ votes have been on a decline”.
The Prime Minister claimed that the party’s shrinking footprint in state legislatures reflects this trend. “Only four states have more than 50 MLAs from Congress,” he said. He went further, asserting that “people don’t consider Congress a party worth voting for”.
Modi accused the opposition of failing to evolve beyond protest politics. “In a democracy, opposition cannot be just about protest, it needs to provide an alternative vision,” he said. “Opposition does not mean blind criticism.”
He argued that successive generations of voters have distanced themselves from the party. “First millennials taught Congress a lesson, now Gen Z is ready to teach them a lesson,” he said, adding that “Gen Z is ready to teach Congress a lesson”.
According to Modi, the anger against the Congress stems from what he described as its record of opposing major reforms and policy decisions. “When country removed Article 370, teen talaq, brought in UPI, swachh Bharat, corona vaccine, they opposed all,” he said. He also alleged that the party opposed the Citizenship Amendment Act and women’s representation measures.
Taking aim at the party’s internal structure, Modi said, “Congress is a club of people serving the family,” suggesting that dynastic politics has alienated voters.
He also accused the Congress of attempting to tarnish India’s image internationally. Referring to the recent AI Summit, he said it was “a proud moment for India. But Congress tried to malign India’s image in front of foreign representatives.”
The Prime Minister said public resentment towards the party’s actions was evident. “There is anger among people against Congress’ deed,” he said, alleging that the party invokes historical figures to shield itself from criticism. “They put forth Mahatma Gandhi when they want to hide their own deeds,” he added.
Linking his political critique to a broader developmental vision, Modi said nation-building required long-term commitment. “When we talk of Viksit Bharat in 2047, some people say Modi will not be alive till then,” he remarked. “Nation building needs vision, patience and timely decisions.”
