The phrase “Republic of Balochistan” is trending across social media platforms following a bold declaration by Baloch nationalist leaders proclaiming independence from Pakistan. This symbolic move, led by figures like Mir Yar Baloch, has reignited global attention on Balochistan’s long-standing grievances, its strategic importance, and its overtures toward India, particularly amid heightened tensions between New Delhi and Islamabad.
Mir Yar Baloch, a renowned writer and an advocate for Baloch rights, shared multiple posts on X (formerly Twitter), issuing the declaration and also urged the Indian government to allow a Baloch embassy in New Delhi. He also asked the Pakistani Army to withdrawn from the region.
“A possible announcement soon should be done as the collapse of the terrorist Pakistan is near. We have claimed our independence and we request India to allow Balochistan’s official office, and embassy in Delhi,” read one of his posts, dated May 9.
He also urged support from the United Nations to recognise it and call a meeting of the UN members. “We also ask the United Nations to recognise the independence of the Democratic Republic of Balochistan and call a meeting of all UN members to lend your support for recognition. There must be a release of billions of funds for currency, and passport printing.
At the same time, social media users circulated a map showing an independent Balochistan, along with images of people waving its flag.

Other Recent Developments
The Balochistan Liberation recently claimed responsibility for 71 coordinated attacks against the Pakistani regime at 51 locations, as part of its ongoing ‘Operation Herof’. The BLA said it targeted Pakistani military and intelligence sites, along with local police stations, mineral transport vehicles and infrastructure along major highways.
In a strongly worded statement issued on May 11, the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) declared that a “new order has become inevitable” in South Asia, asserting that Pakistan’s growing military failures, diplomatic isolation, and use of religious terrorism have created irreversible fractures in the region’s security framework.
The BLA dismissed suggestions that Baloch resistance is a proxy conflict, asserting its independent identity as a “dynamic and decisive party” with a legitimate role in the military, political, and strategic transformation of the region. “The BLA is neither a pawn nor a silent spectator,” said the statement, adding that it will not rest until Pakistan is dismantled as a terror-exporting state.
Calling Pakistan a “state whose hands are stained with blood and whose every promise is soaked in it,” the group rejected Islamabad’s recent calls for ceasefire and dialogue, branding them “a deception and war tactic.” The group urged India and other regional actors to stop entertaining illusions of peace with Pakistan, asserting that “the time has passed to believe in Pakistan’s promises.”
History of Resistance: From Accession to Insurgency
Balochistan, Pakistan’s largest and most resource-rich province, has a tumultuous history marked by resistance and rebellion. Originally part of the princely state of Kalat, Balochistan was annexed by Pakistan in 1948 under contentious circumstances. This led to the first of several insurgencies, with Baloch nationalists protesting what they viewed as forced integration and the erosion of their autonomy. Subsequent decades saw multiple uprisings, each met with military crackdowns, fuelling a cycle of dissent and suppression.
Grievances against Islamabad
Reports of enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and military operations have further alienated the local population. The recent killing of renowned Baloch car racer Tariq Baloch, allegedly under Pakistan’s “kill and dump” policy, exemplifies the ongoing human rights concerns in the region.
Strategic Significance: Gwadar Port and the CPEC
Balochistan's geopolitical importance is underscored by the Gwadar Port, a linchpin in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Envisioned as a gateway for trade between China and the Middle East, the port has attracted significant Chinese investment. However, locals argue that the benefits of these projects bypass them, leading to displacement and environmental degradation without adequate compensation. The port has also become a flashpoint for attacks by Baloch insurgents targeting Chinese nationals, reflecting deep-seated resentment toward both Islamabad and Beijing.
Overtures to India: Seeking Support and Recognition
In a notable development, Baloch leaders have extended symbolic gestures towards India, seeking support and recognition. Mir Yar Baloch called on India to rename the historic Jinnah's House to "Balochistan House," signalling a desire for stronger ties. Social media campaigns have also seen Baloch activists expressing solidarity with India.
What’s at Stake: Regional Stability and International Implications
The declaration of independence by Baloch leaders, while largely symbolic, has significant implications. It challenges Pakistan's territorial integrity and could embolden other separatist movements within the country. For India, increased engagement with Balochistan could serve as a strategic counterbalance to Pakistan's actions in Kashmir.
