What if the best way to explore one of the world’s oldest cities was simply by putting one foot in front of the other?
In an age where travellers are increasingly craving slower, more meaningful experiences, one ancient European city has quietly taken the top spot for doing exactly that. According to a new global study by BookRetreats.com, Athens, Greece, has officially been named the most walkable tourist destination in the world, beating nearly 50 cities across continents to claim the title.
And honestly, it’s hard to think of a city more deserving.
Athens Tops the World for Walkability
Leave it to Greece — the birthplace of philosophy, democracy and the Olympic Games — to offer the modern world something just as essential today: a city that’s best explored on foot.
As part of BookRetreats.com’s Holiday Happiness Index, the platform joined hands with Dr. Natalie Dattilo-Ryan, a Harvard-affiliated clinical psychologist and holistic happiness expert, to uncover destinations that truly help travellers feel happier, healthier and more relaxed. Rather than focusing only on sightseeing or affordability, the study took a deeper, more human approach to travel wellbeing.
Nearly 50 cities from around the world were closely evaluated using five core “feel-good” pillars that directly influence how travellers experience a destination. These included the amount of natural sunlight a city receives, how well it supports restful and quality sleep, and the ease of accessing a healthy, balanced diet while travelling. Equal importance was given to opportunities for spending time in nature and staying active through physical movement, especially walking, which has been proven to boost both mental clarity and mood.

Together, these factors created a comprehensive picture of how travel can nourish both body and mind — and ultimately revealed which cities don’t just look good on postcards, but actually feel good to be in.
Walkability played a crucial role, with cities assessed on walking distances between major tourist attractions, monuments, and landmarks. The shorter and more seamless the walks, the higher the score.
Athens didn’t just perform well — it earned a perfect score of 20 out of 20, making it the most walkable tourist city on Earth.
Why Athens Is the Ultimate Walking City
Home to more than three million residents and welcoming over seven million tourists annually, Athens somehow manages to feel intimate, navigable and deeply immersive — especially on foot.
Within the historic city centre, some of the world’s most iconic ancient landmarks sit surprisingly close to one another. Visitors can comfortably walk between major attractions in 30 minutes or less, including:
1. The Acropolis, crowned by the Parthenon.
2. The Ancient Agora, once the heart of public life.
3. The Temple of Olympian Zeus, one of Greece’s grandest ruins.
4. The Temple of Hephaestus, one of the best-preserved ancient temples.
5. Panathenaic Stadium, where the first modern Olympic Games were held.
Unlike sprawling modern cities where sightseeing involves endless transit, Athens invites travellers to wander, pause, explore and absorb history at street level.

Pedestrian-Friendly Streets and Timeless Atmosphere
What truly elevates Athens isn’t just proximity — it’s atmosphere.
The historic centre features numerous pedestrian-only streets and zones, allowing visitors to stroll freely without traffic interruptions. Neighbourhoods like Plaka, Monastiraki and Thissio buzz with lively street life, open-air cafés, musicians and the scent of fresh Greek cuisine.
Walking through Athens feels less like ticking attractions off a list and more like stepping into a living museum, where ancient ruins coexist effortlessly with modern city life.
Yes, It’s Hilly — But the Views Are Worth It
Of course, Athens isn’t completely flat. Areas like Plaka and Anafiotika are famously steep, with narrow lanes and uphill climbs that can challenge even seasoned walkers — especially during the hotter months.
But the reward?
Panoramic views of gleaming marble monuments, terracotta rooftops and the shimmering Aegean Sea that make every uphill step worthwhile.
In Athens, even the walk itself becomes part of the experience.

A City Perfectly Aligned With Slow Travel Trends
Athens’ top ranking comes at a time when global travel habits are shifting. More travellers are prioritising slow travel over rushed itineraries, walkable cities over car-dependent destinations and mental wellness alongside sightseeing.
By encouraging physical movement, sunshine exposure and unhurried exploration, Athens naturally aligns with these evolving travel values — without trying to be trendy.
Other Cities Among the World’s Most Walkable Tourist Destinations
While Athens claimed the top spot, several other global cities also ranked high on BookRetreats.com’s list of the most walkable tourist destinations in the world, including:
Each offers its own blend of pedestrian-friendly design, cultural landmarks and immersive street experiences — but Athens stands alone at the very top.
