Lonely Planet Co-Founder Tony Wheeler Lists 4 Places He Won’t Return To

Tony Wheeler, the co-founder of Lonely Planet, has spent over five decades exploring more than 170 countries. But even for someone who built a life around global travel, some destinations — no matter how vibrant or memorable — no longer make the cut. Based on his personal experiences and reflections, Wheeler recently listed four places he doesn’t plan to revisit anytime soon.

Here’s a look at the destinations — and the reasons behind his decisions:

Russia: A Journey Once Loved, Now on Pause

Having traveled across Russia multiple times, including the famed Trans-Siberian Railway in 2013, Wheeler holds vivid memories of the country's vast landscapes and cultural richness. He has also visited Ukraine, forming a deeper connection with the region. However, recent developments and ongoing global tensions have led him to put this destination on indefinite hold.

He reflects on past incidents that left a mark, including the Malaysia Airlines MH17 tragedy in 2014, which deeply affected global travelers. With evolving circumstances, he now feels this destination is best avoided — at least for the time being.

Saudi Arabia: Memorable Encounters, but Difficult Realities

Back in 2002, Wheeler enjoyed a deeply enriching visit to Najran, a southern city near the border with Yemen. Guided by a knowledgeable local, he explored the region’s unique cultural fabric. Yet, over time, other concerns have weighed heavily on his travel choices.

However, over the years, certain global events have shaped his decision not to return. One such incident that left a strong impression on him was the tragic killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul in 2018, a case that drew international attention.

Additionally, during his travels in Somaliland in 2022, Wheeler encountered cheetahs rescued from wildlife trafficking networks — efforts aimed at stopping the illegal trade of exotic animals. The animals were reportedly being smuggled to be kept as pets, a trend that deeply disturbed him and reinforced his resolve.

Bali, Indonesia: Paradise with a Catch

Bali has long been a favorite for many, including Wheeler. From lush rice paddies and traditional dance to art, cuisine, and scenic resorts — he has praised the island for its cultural depth and beauty.

In fact, he once helped plant rice with local farmers in Ubud during research for his book Rice Trails. More recently, he enjoyed a travel writer reunion on the island. However, he admits that traffic congestion on the island has become a challenge. For now, unless there’s a compelling reason to return, Wheeler prefers to explore places with smoother travel experiences.

USA: A Nation Close to the Heart, But Not on the Itinerary

Tony Wheeler has a long-standing connection with the United States, having lived in various regions and visited nearly all 50 states. His last trip in December 2023 took him across Missouri, where he explored the history of German settlers and Civil War heritage.

Yet, despite these rich experiences, Wheeler now finds himself hesitant to return. Between political chaos, wild tariffs and what he calls America’s growing alignment with authoritarian regimes, he is content to leave the USA at “the bottom of [his] dance card.”

Although he still holds great affection for his American friends and memories, the current climate has nudged this once-favorite destination off his future itinerary — for now.

With a lifetime of travel behind him, Tony Wheeler’s reflections offer insight into how destinations can evolve — not just geographically or politically, but personally. His decision to avoid these four places isn’t about negativity, but about aligning travel with values, comfort, and meaningful experiences.

For today’s traveler, it’s a gentle reminder that where we choose to go — or not go — says a lot about who we are and what we care about. Even the most seasoned adventurers know when it’s time to move on.
