Google acquired Fitbit in 2021 and since then the company has launched several new smartwatches including Versa 4 and Sense 2 in 2022. However, Google has confirmed that it will no longer launch new smartwatches under the Fitbit brand name and instead, it will focus on Pixel Watch series to fill that gap, as reported by Engadget.
Google’s director of product management for Pixel wearables, told Engadget that “Pixel Watch is our smartwatch part of the portfolio” in response to a question about any future Fitbit-branded smartwatches, adding that Pixel Watch is “our next iteration of smartwatch for Fitbit.”
No Fitbit smartwatches, but it isn’t the end for Fitbit
In light of the recent confirmation, it is pretty much clear that Fitbit will no longer exist as a smartwatch brand. However, it will continue to make fitness trackers offering long battery life.
“Fitbit-branded products will focus on trackers that are “more minimalistic” with long battery life, said Waraich
When Google announced the first Pixel Watch, it highlighted several features that were borrowed from Fitbit. And with every generation of the Pixel Watch, Google has improved those features and added new ones too to bring Pixel Watches up to the competition and offer improved health and fitness features – as good as – Fitbit smartwatches.
It is worth mentioning that the existing Fitbit smartwatches will continue to be sold in the market and will also receive software support and even new features until a certain time.
