Social media platform Reddit has extended its conversational artificial intelligence (AI) feature, Reddit Answers, to India, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and several other markets, as part of its efforts to better compete with OpenAI's ChatGPT, Anthropic's Claude, and Perplexity.
Currently available in beta on desktop, iOS, and Android, Reddit Answers allows users to ask questions and receive curated summaries of relevant conversations and details across the platform using a new, AI-powered conversational interface. It will include links to related communities and posts.
Reddit users, also called Redditors, will be able to read relevant snippets and answers inline from other users, open full conversations, and deepen their search with their own or suggested follow-up questions. The company first launched this feature in December 2024, rolling it out to a select number of users in the United States.
For instance, you can ask "Suggest good Indian cartoons for young kids," and Reddit will provide a curated summary of top recommendations from other users on the platform along with quick snippets about each show and links to detailed threads where people can read full conversations.
Each response includes in-line citations linking to the original comment or post, along with a list of communities to find more related information.
Reddit noted that it uses generative AI to help find, synthesise, and summarise existing posts and comments across communities on the platform. In April, Reddit announced it is using Google's Gemini AI model to boost its search capabilities and offer speedier and more accurate answers.
At present, visitors can ask up to 10 questions per week, while logged-in redditors can ask up to 20 questions per day, and Premium subscribers can ask up to 100 questions per day.
"People know that Reddit has answers, advice, and perspectives on almost anything they're looking for, and AI-powered search is part of our longer-term vision to improve the search experience on Reddit" the social media platform said in December 2024.
The feature, which currently supports English, is also available in other Asian countries such as Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Singapore, with plans to soon roll it out to other markets and languages.
India, the world's second-largest internet market, has emerged as a key focus for the social media firm's future growth strategy, both in terms of user growth and revenue. The platform's rapid user growth in the country has been a significant driver of Reddit's rising daily active users from international markets in recent quarters.
Moneycontrol reported in February that Reddit is building out a team in the country that can help deliver culturally relevant local experiences in the country.
The social media platform is currently home for over 100,000 active communities and nearly 400 million active weekly users, of which 101.7 million are daily active users.
