BSNL rolls out VoWiFi calling across India: What it means, how it works and who can use it

BSNL has launched Voice over Wi-Fi or VoWiFi services across all telecom circles in India. The feature enables users to make calls and send messages using Wi-Fi instead of mobile networks, helping improve connectivity in homes, offices and remote regions with weak signal coverage.

  • VoWiFi lets users call and text over Wi-Fi, aiding those in low-signal areas.
  • No extra charges; calls use the phone's default dialler and existing plan.

State-run telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited has officially launched its Voice over Wi-Fi service across India. The company announced the nationwide rollout through its social media channels, positioning the move as a solution for users who struggle with poor or inconsistent mobile network coverage. With this update, BSNL joins other major operators in offering Wi-Fi-based calling as a standard feature.

VoWiFi, short for Voice over Wi-Fi, allows users to make and receive voice calls and send SMS messages using a Wi-Fi connection rather than relying solely on cellular towers. In practical terms, this means that as long as a user is connected to a stable Wi-Fi network, they can stay reachable even in areas where mobile signals are weak or completely unavailable.

BSNL says the service is available to all its customers and is particularly aimed at improving connectivity in villages, remote regions and indoor locations where network penetration remains a challenge. Many users face dropped calls or no signal at all inside homes, offices, basements or buildings with thick walls. VoWiFi is designed to address exactly these scenarios by shifting voice traffic to Wi-Fi networks.

Once enabled, calls and messages are routed through available Wi-Fi connections, including BSNL Bharat Fibre broadband and other third-party internet services. The experience is intended to be seamless. Phones that support the feature can automatically switch between cellular networks and Wi-Fi during an ongoing call, depending on signal strength. This handover happens in the background, without requiring any action from the user.

One of the key advantages of BSNL’s VoWiFi implementation is that it does not require any additional apps. Users do not need to download a separate calling application or create a new account. Calls are placed and received through the phone’s default dialler, and messages continue to work through the standard messaging app. From a user perspective, the experience remains largely unchanged, except for improved reliability in low-signal areas.

BSNL has also clarified that there are no additional charges for using VoWiFi. Calls made over Wi-Fi are billed in the same way as regular voice calls under the user’s existing plan. By offloading some voice traffic to Wi-Fi networks, the service also helps reduce congestion on mobile infrastructure, which can improve overall network performance.

To start using VoWiFi, customers need a compatible smartphone and must enable the Wi-Fi calling option in their device settings. The exact location of this toggle may vary depending on the phone brand and software version. Generally, it can be found under network or call settings. Once enabled, the phone will automatically use Wi-Fi for calls when available.

Phone compatibility is an important factor to consider. While most modern smartphones support VoWiFi, availability can differ by model and software update. BSNL advises users who face issues or are unsure about compatibility to visit a customer service centre or contact its helpline at 1800-1503 for assistance.

The rollout of VoWiFi is a significant step for BSNL as it continues efforts to modernise its services and improve user experience. For customers in areas with limited mobile coverage, this update could make a noticeable difference in day-to-day communication. As Wi-Fi access continues to expand across India, VoWiFi has the potential to become a core feature rather than a fallback option for BSNL users.
