The Washington Post has announced that it is partnering with OpenAI to bring its news content directly into ChatGPT. The partnership will allow users to access Post stories through summaries, quotes, and links in response to relevant prompts. The move is aimed at making credible news easier to discover in AI-generated responses, especially on fast-moving and complex topics, said The Post.
The deal gives ChatGPT permission to highlight The Post’s reporting across politics, business, tech, and global affairs, with clear attribution and links back to original articles for deeper context.
Peter Elkins-Williams, Head of Global Partnerships at The Post, said the collaboration is part of a broader effort to meet audiences where they are. “Ensuring ChatGPT users have our impactful reporting at their fingertips builds on our commitment to provide access where, how, and when our audiences want it,” he said.
Varun Shetty, who leads media partnerships at OpenAI, said over 500 million people use ChatGPT weekly. “By investing in high-quality journalism by partners like The Washington Post, we’re helping ensure our users get timely, trustworthy information when they need it.”
The deal is part of a wider effort by OpenAI to work with news publishers. So far, it has struck similar agreements with more than 20 outlets, covering over 160 brands in 20+ languages.
The partnership also builds on The Post’s own AI experiments, including tools like “Ask The Post AI,” “Climate Answers,” and newsroom tech like “Haystacker.” The paper says it remains LLM-agnostic as it continues to integrate AI into its reporting and distribution.
