OpenAI has just launched ImageGen in its API, and it’s already creating a buzz. The announcement came from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who kept it short and fun on X, saying, “imagegen is launched in the openai api! build cool stuff plz.”
So, what does this mean? Basically, developers can now use OpenAI’s image generation tool directly in their own apps or websites. But what makes it exciting is how much control they now have. You can choose how fast the image is created, how detailed it should be, what kind of background you want, and even what file format it should come in. There’s also a setting to adjust how sensitive the system is when checking for inappropriate content, which is super helpful depending on what kind of project you’re working on.
Some big names are already testing it out. Canva is looking at ways to turn rough sketches into polished designs. GoDaddy is experimenting with tools to help users create and edit logos. HubSpot is exploring how it can help users quickly make marketing images, while Instacart is testing it for recipe and shopping list visuals. Even video platform InVideo is using it to offer smarter editing tools.
The model behind this—called gpt-image-1—has safety systems in place to avoid harmful content, and OpenAI says they don’t train on customer data from the API. Pricing is pretty reasonable too, with an average image costing between 2 to 19 cents depending on quality.
In short, OpenAI just made it way easier for anyone building something online to create custom visuals, and it looks like the possibilities are just getting started.
