Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei on why he spends up to 40% of his time on culture and not code

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei says he devotes up to 40% of his time to culture, arguing in an interview on the Dwarkesh Podcast earlier this month that alignment and transparency — not products alone — will determine who ultimately wins the AI race globally competitive.

“I probably spend a third, maybe 40%, of my time making sure the culture of Anthropic is good,” Dario Amodei said on the Dwarkesh Podcast earlier this month.

For the CEO of AI startup Anthropic, the most important part of his job is not reviewing model architectures or debating product features. Instead, Amodei says his focus is on ensuring the company’s culture remains aligned as it scales rapidly.

Anthropic now has around 2,500 employees and carries a reported valuation of $380 billion. At that size, Amodei acknowledged, it is no longer realistic for him to weigh in on every technical or product decision. Rather than dive into code, he concentrates on the broader picture: making sure employees believe in the company’s mission, trust each other, and work toward shared goals.

“I think we’ve done an extraordinarily good job, even if not perfect, of holding the company together, making everyone feel the mission,” he said.

A core part of that effort is a biweekly all-hands meeting he calls “DVQ,” short for Dario Vision Quest. During these sessions, Amodei stands in front of the company with a three- or four-page document and speaks for about an hour. Topics range from product strategy to geopolitics and the wider AI industry. A large portion of employees attend either in person or virtually.

Amodei also maintains an active presence on Slack, where he answers employee questions and shares internal reflections. He describes his leadership style as “unfiltered,” emphasizing honesty over corporate messaging.

“The point is to get a reputation of telling the company the truth about what’s happening, to call things what they are, to acknowledge problems, to avoid the sort of ‘corpo speak,’” he said on the podcast.

In Amodei’s view, culture is not secondary to innovation. As competition in artificial intelligence intensifies, he argues that internal cohesion and alignment — not just model performance — will determine which company ultimately leads the race.
