Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, demonstrated the transformative power of artificial intelligence by recreating Microsoft's first-ever product, Altair BASIC, using Copilot. As part of Microsoft's 50th-anniversary celebrations, Nadella — via a short video of the demonstration — showcasing the power of AI and taking a trip down the nostalgia lane.
What was Microsoft’s first product?Altair BASIC, originally developed by Bill Gates and Paul Allen in 1975, was a programming language designed for the Altair 8800 microcomputer. It marked the inception of Microsoft and laid the foundation for the company's future innovations. “Ingenious combination of technical skill and resourcefulness,” is how Nadela described it in the video. Allen and Gates took six weeks to develop the product.
Using Copilot, Microsoft's AI-powered assistant, Nadella recreated Altair BASIC with precision and efficiency. Copilot, known for its ability to assist developers by generating code and providing intelligent suggestions, proved to be useful.
Nadella’s first prompt was “I kind of have an Altair but don’t know how to use it.” The Microsoft CEO then asks Copilot to create an emulator and give a plan. Nadella then gives a few more commands and shows how fast Copilot can execute them.
It took Copilot just over 10 minutes to recreate the whole process.
