  • Shivani Karnick lost 10 kg using the 80-20 rule and daily movement.
  • She preferred varied activities like dance, walking, and swimming over strict routines.
  • Weight loss became enjoyable by rewarding herself for each milestone achieved.

Weight loss needs patience, discipline, and perseverance, especially when you want to sustain it. This requires switching things up every once in a while to avoid monotony and being easy on yourself. This is what influencer Shivani Karnick did to shed 10 kg. She made movement a part of her daily life, stuck to the 80–20 method, and turned weight loss into a game.

80-20 rule

In a video on Instagram, Shivani shared how diet culture makes you think that weight loss is “strict, no fun, and miserable.” But that’s not how it really is. To shed weight, she followed the 80-20 rule, which meant 80% health habit and 20% freedom. She said, “Did that 20% slow me down? Of course. Would I have lost weight faster without it? Probably, but life would have been boring as hell.”

She added that when weight loss becomes a punishment, people quit. They start again only to repeat the process. This leads to zero consistency and no progress. The 80-20 makes the process more realistic and you shed weight without even realising it.

No strict routine, just movement

Shivani revealed wasting money hiring a personal trainer for months, but that didn’t help. She then switched to “no rules, no strict routines, just move,” mode and this helped. The influencer said she opted for a dance workout on her favourite song one day, the other she walked in malls for hours to burn calories. Gymming was for the weekdays and on weekends, she switched things up with fun activities like swimming, rock climbing, Sunday run club.

She said, “I kept switching it up and never got bored. All of a sudden, movement wasn’t a punishment anymore. I craved it even on vacations.” While working out on a holiday was not mandatory, she said, “I had new yoga studios to try and new scenic routes to jog in.”

Weight loss as reward-based game

The most fun part? Shivani turned weight loss into a reward-based game. She said, “I made a list of things I wanted to buy, places I wanted to go to, dumb things I didn’t need but wanted. Every kilo down, instant reward.” Every time she lost a kilo, she bought a yoga mat or a projector for movie nights. Big milestones meant bigger bribes. Shivani noted that weight less can be boring, but switching up things and rewarding yourself can help in a big way.
