Margot Robbie’s arrival at the world premiere of Wuthering Heights in Los Angeles felt quietly powerful, the kind of moment that lingers long after the cameras move on.
On 28 January 2026, the Australian actor and producer stepped onto the red carpet at the TCL Chinese Theatre wearing a custom Schiaparelli gown, beautifully made and undeniably striking. Still, it wasn’t the craftsmanship of the dress that held everyone’s attention. It was the necklace resting close to her heart.
Margot Robbie wore Elizabeth Taylor’s legendary Taj Mahal diamond necklace, valued at around $8.8 million, approximately Rs 73 crore. The jewel seemed to carry its own presence, heavy with memory and meaning. Rather than feeling like a showpiece, it came across as something deeply personal, especially given the story behind it.
Speaking about the necklace, Margot Robbie reflected on its famous Hollywood past and the emotions tied to it, saying, "It's the Taj Mahal diamond that Richard Burton gave it to her. And I know there's something kind of Cathy and Heathcliff about Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor in mind. So it's not appropriate. yeah"
The comparison felt natural. The passionate, often chaotic love shared by Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor mirrors the intensity of Heathcliff and Catherine — two lovers defined by obsession, longing and emotional extremes.
When asked how it felt to wear such a historic piece, Margot Robbie was visibly taken aback by the weight of it, emotionally rather than physically. She admitted, " It's crazy and it's like a heart. I remember when we first with Andrew, my stylist, talked about what we are going to wear tonight. He said I feel like you need to be wearing like the equivalent of the heart of the ocean. And then yeah, souvenirs, So anyways I feel like this is the real life equivalent of the heart of the ocean."
Margot Robbie also spoke about the deeper, older history behind the diamond, explaining, "And the history of the necklace is amazing. Like the woman who's the taj Mahal essentially buried. She's buried there to essentially her grave and he the diamond was her's orginally and anyways, it's got a lot of romantic history."
As Jacob Elordi appeared alongside her in a gothic look befitting the film’s tone, Margot Robbie’s jewellery quietly stole the spotlight. By choosing such a meaningful accessory, Margot Robbie didn’t just dress for the occasion — she told a story.
Some jewellery experts believe Emperor Shah Jahan gifted the diamond to his wife Mumtaz Mahal, which explains why it became known as the Taj Mahal Diamond. This connection adds deep emotional meaning, linking the jewel to one of history’s greatest love stories.
In 1971, the necklace was acquired by Cartier. A year later, Cartier designer Alfred Durante redesigned it, replacing the original Indian silk cord with an ornate gold and ruby chain featuring tassels and rondelles.
In 1972, Richard Burton bought the necklace from Cartier as a birthday gift for Elizabeth Taylor and surprised her with it on 27 February while they were in Budapest. The jewel later became one of the most iconic pieces in Taylor’s collection.
After her death, the necklace was sold for $8.8 million in December 2011 as part of the auction of Elizabeth Taylor’s estate, setting records for Indian jewellery. Most recently, Margot Robbie brought it back into the spotlight by wearing it with a striking Schiaparelli couture gown.
