Kajal Chaudhary, a 24-year-old SWAT commando with the Delhi Police, was four months pregnant when she died after allegedly being attacked by her husband at their home in southwest Delhi’s Mohan Garden area, her brother, Nikhil, said on Thursday.

Police said that Kajal died on Tuesday while the assault took place five days before her death. Following her demise, investigators added murder and dowry harassment sections to the FIR after her family accused her husband and in-laws of repeated harassment over dowry demands. A senior police officer confirmed that the dowry charges were included based on statements given by the victim’s relatives, The Times of India reported.

The accused, Ankur Chaudhary, was arrested soon after the incident and has been sent to judicial custody in Tihar Jail. Police also informed the Union Defence Ministry, where Ankur worked as a clerk.

He has since been suspended from his job. According to investigators, Ankur allegedly hit Kajal’s head multiple times against a door frame and later attacked her with a dumbbell during a heated argument. Police have also questioned several of his relatives as part of the ongoing probe.

In his complaint, Kajal’s brother Nikhil, who is also a Delhi Police constable, stated that his sister had been facing humiliation and pressure over dowry for a long time. He said tensions between the couple increased even after Kajal gave birth to a son in 2024. Nikhil claimed that Kajal often expressed distress over the situation and had told him she could no longer tolerate the harassment.

To ease tensions, Nikhil said he had spoken to Ankur, who agreed to arrange a separate residence for the couple. "In 2024, he acquired a flat in Mohan Garden. However, even there, he began arguing with my sister, blaming her for ‘ruining his life' and ‘keeping him away from his family'. To avoid further conflict, my sister chose to return and stay at her parental home in Gannaur in Haryana," he said in the FIR.

The couple’s one-and-a-half-year-old son has been living with Kajal’s family since the attack. Nikhil described his sister as hardworking and dedicated, saying she was inspired to join the police force after seeing him get selected in 2018.

Kajal allegedly called her brother during an argument on January 22. Nikhil claimed that while he was still on the phone, Ankur began assaulting her and hit her on the head with the dumbbell. "Five minutes later, Ankur called me and bluntly informed me of the assault,” Nikhil said. Kajal was first taken to a nearby hospital and later shifted to a Ghaziabad facility due to the severity of her injuries, where she died three days later.
