iPadOS 26 review: The iPad finally gets its Mac moment

For years, iPad fans have asked the same question: Why can’t this just work like a Mac? With iPadOS 26, Apple has finally stopped pretending the iPad is only a blown-up iPhone. This year’s update introduces full-fledged windowing, actual Mac-style multitasking that finally lets you treat the iPad like the productivity device Apple always said it could be.

The big deal: Real windows, not just splits

The biggest change is the new multitasking system. iPadOS 26 lets you open multiple app windows, move them freely, resize them using a new drag handle, and layer them just like you would on a Mac. Even the “traffic light” buttons for closing, minimising, and full-screening windows have made their way over from macOS. Long-press them, and you’ll get tiling and layout options for up to four apps at once.

Older iPads may be limited to four open apps, but newer models support even more. You can switch between windows via a revamped Exposé view—just swipe up from the bottom of the display.

Don’t want all that complexity? Multitasking is off by default. A toggle in Control Center lets you switch back to full-screen mode anytime. Slide Over and Split View are gone, but Stage Manager sticks around for those who like their multitasking grouped.

Mac-like menu Bars, app library in Dock

Apps now get a menu bar at the top—yes, like on a Mac—with app-specific tools and options (though devs need to update their apps to support it). The dock also adds the App Library, making it easier to open new apps into windows.

Use a trackpad or Magic Keyboard? The iPad’s cursor is now a traditional arrow. It may seem minor, but it helps make the whole experience feel more like using macOS.

Other new tricks

There are a host of other nifty features which iPadOS 26 brings to the iPad. For instance, the Files app now has a proper list view with resizable columns and folder customisation. You also set default apps for file types, something iPad users have begged for.

Yes, there’s now a Phone app also on the iPad. It works over Wi-Fi via your iPhone, and supports features like Live Voicemail, Call Screening, and Hold Assist. It’s niche, but useful.

Should you install the beta?

If you’re curious and can handle the occasional glitch, the public beta is already out. It’s been stable so far, but don’t forget to back up your device before installing. For most users thought it is best to maybe wait for the final release.

What we think

iPadOS 26 finally makes the iPad feel like a proper computer. It’s not just about the flashy Liquid Glass design—this is the most meaningful change to iPad productivity in years.
