Apple could use periscope lenses in the upcoming iPhone 16 models for enhanced camera zoom, particularly in the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, according to a report by DigiTimes Asia. The Cupertino-based tech giant has tied up with two camera lens module manufacturers – Largan Precision and Genius Electronic Optical (GSEO) – for the same, claims the report, based on inputs from industry sources.
Rumours about Apple going for a new camera module for the iPhone 16 Pro Max to increase its zoom capabilities have been doing the rounds for a while. The report by DigiTimes Asia lends credence to the rumours about Apple going for a tetraprism 5x zoom lens for both the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. Currently, the only iPhone model to come equipped with a 5x zoom lens is the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The iPhone 15 Pro comes with a 3x zoom lens. The zoom lens-based divide could change with the iPhone 16 series.
“Largan supplied periscope lenses for the premium iPhone 15 Pro Max launched last year. This year, more models in the upcoming iPhone lineup will feature periscope lenses. GSEO is likely to join as a new supplier for this year’s iPhones,” says the report by DigiTimes Asia.
Till now, only the top tier flagship smartphone models like the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, Google Pixel 8 Pro and the Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max have been graced with a 5x zoom lens. This year, besides the iPhone 16 Pro Max, Apple could also give the iPhone 16 Pro model a tetraprism 5x zoom lens, thus having two of its flagship models with equal zoom capabilities.
Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 16 series models as well as new iPads and other products in September this year.
