Integration of artificial intelligence (AI) will open a world of opportunities for the business management software offerings catering to small and medium enterprises (SMEs), Tally Solutions chief of engineering Nabendu Das has said.
Speaking at Moneycontrol Startup Conclave, Das said while AI is a powerful technology but is yet to make its presence felt in the SME segment.
“We are working on AI for SMEs. We believe AI is a very powerful technology but it has not come up for SMEs yet,” Das said.
“At Tally, we are working on a solution to automatically create invoice and … to have intelligent conversation with Tally data, using NLP (natural language processing) and Conversational AI.”
Tally is a leading business management product for SMEs in India, with a customer base of 2.5 million businesses, thousands of partners who cater to the customers and a little over 1,000 employees. These are the company’s pillars to strength, Das said.
How Tally remains relevant
At time when many new-age startups in India and globally are coming up with business management solutions and SaaS offerings at discounted rates, Tally, which started in 1986, has continued to remain relevant.
When asked how the company negotiated the changes in tech and business space, Das said Tally has a great developer ecosystem and there are a lot of people who can do of the last-mile customisation.
“Compared to building software for enterprises, building software for SMEs is very different. It’s not a very structural environment. Tally is a product which doesn’t enforce on unidirectional workforce,” he said.
Moreover, businesses can get Tally with a one-time licensing fee. If the business wants to upgrade to the newest model, only then they have to pay. The company wants to focus on retaining and consistent use of its solutions by customers.
“These are the key strengths and the heart of it is the product. What sets it apart are the non-functional capabilities like simplicity, flexibility, speed and so on. This is where the technology plays a role,” Das added.
In terms of feature launches and competing with startups, Das said Tally doesn’t believe in minimum viable product (MVP) unlike startups. “We typically say that if this is the audience we cater to, I'm going to build a product that's going to take care (of the problem statement),” he said.
