WPL 2024 Delhi Capitals vs UP Warriorz: Recent form
In what will be the second match for both teams, they will vie for their first points of the season, having lost their respective season openers by, as Ian Smith would say, the barest of margins. Capitals, who played reigning champions Mumbai Indians on February 23 in the second edition’s curtain-raiser, went down by four wickets in a final-ball humdinger headlined by uncapped Indian batting allrounder S Sajana’s final-ball-first-ball six that sealed Mumbai’s victory.
The following game had the same equation off the last ball of the match as the first fixture: five needed for a win. UP Warriorz’s Deepti Sharma, the on-strike batter, could only scamper for a couple, with the Royal Challengers Bangalore scripting a two-run heist as uncapped Indian legspinner Asha Sobhana emerged Player of the Match for her 5 for 22, the first five-wicket haul by an Indian in the WPL.
WPL 2024 Delhi Capitals vs UP Warriorz: Players to watch
Jemimah Rodrigues played second-fiddle to half-centurion Alice Capsey in DC’s opening loss, but the experienced India international’s breezy 24-ball 42 at second-drop made for a refreshing sight. The 23-year-old right-hander usually plays anchor in the Indian side, but her attacking play on Friday – she struck five fours and two sixes – gave a glimpse into the quick changing of gears Rodrigues has been working hard on behind the scenes for a while now.
UPW left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone returned only one wicket – of Ellyse Perry – in the match against RCB for her 26 runs off four overs, but as surfaces in Bengaluru start wearing down, trust Ecclestone to add more wickets to her name. The top-ranked T20I and ODI bowler in the world, the 24-year-old has been a key cog in UPW’s bowling attack since the inaugural season. With the bat, too, the Englishwoman can give the ball a humpty and snaffle some quick runs down the order.
