The Cold Moon, December’s full moon, will offer a mesmerising celestial display, marking the end of 2024. As the last full moon of the year and autumn, it promises a chilly yet enchanting close to the astronomical calendar.
The moon will officially reach its full phase at 4:01 a.m. EST on Sunday, Dec. 15. Viewers can catch its best moments later that day during moonrise in the eastern sky. This luminous spectacle will appear in Taurus, surrounded by bright stars and the planet Jupiter.
For those equipped with binoculars or small telescopes, the view promises a treat. The moon’s orange-tinged surface will glow beautifully against the horizon. Known as the Cold Moon, its name reflects its timing, rising just before the winter solstice. This solstice marks the year's longest night in the Northern Hemisphere.
Cultural Significance of December’s Full Moon
Cultural significance enriches this full moon’s legacy. The Mohawk culture coined the term Cold Moon, as noted in the Old Farmer's Almanac. Other Native American tribes referred to it as Drift Clearing Moon, Snow Moon, or Winter Maker Moon. Celtic traditions call it the Oak Moon or Long Nights Moon, symbolising the season’s frosty charm.
The Cold Moon mirrors the sun’s path in the sky. While the sun dips lowest during the day, the moon climbs highest at night. On this occasion, it will shine below Capella in Auriga and above Betelgeuse in Orion, with Jupiter prominently to its right.
The Cold Moon and the Geminid Meteor Shower
Adding to the celestial scene is the Geminid meteor shower. Known for its vibrant streaks, this shower peaks near the Cold Moon. However, the moon’s brightness may obscure the view of fainter meteors.
The Cold Moon sets the stage for 2024’s celestial finale. The next full moon, the Wolf Moon, will follow on Jan. 13, 2025, continuing the lunar spectacle.
Mark your calendars to enjoy this frosty marvel. A crisp December evening awaits under a luminous Cold Moon.
