Six planetary alignment that happened on 28th February this year was witnessed by stargazers. This is happening again but this time there are only two planets who will align together in the night sky. This rare event will happen on 9th June 2026.
The planets involved are Venus and Jupiter, they will come "extremely close" to each other on this day. In reality, the planets are still millions of kilometres apart. The alignment is only a visual effect caused by their positions in space.
The Two Brightest Planets in the Sky
Venus and Jupiter are the brightest planets visible from Earth. Venus is often called the “Evening Star” or “Morning Star.” It shines brighter than any other planet.
Jupiter is the largest planet in the Solar System. It is also one of the easiest planets to spot in the sky. When these two bright worlds appear together, the result is a very striking celestial display.
When to see the Two Planetary Alignment?
Skywatchers will be able to see two close alignments between Venus and Jupiter on June 9, 2026. The rare alignment will happen later in the evening after sunset.
Around 9:30 p.m. EST, Venus and Jupiter will appear very close together above the western horizon. This will appear in the night sky for maybe an hour between sunset and the two planets setting beneath the horizon.
Where Will This Conjunction Take Place?
The conjunction will be visible from many parts of the world, including North America, Europe, Asia and parts of Africa. Observers should look toward the west-northwestern horizon shortly after sunset. The planets will appear low in the evening sky.
How to See This Night Sky Event?
No telescope is required to see this night sky event. Both Venus and Jupiter are extremely bright, making them easy to spot with the naked eye. For a better view, find a location with a clear view of the western horizon.
Look at the sky shortly after sunset. Use binoculars if you want to see the planets more clearly. Under clear skies, the planets will appear like two bright “stars” shining close together.
Are the Planets Really Close Together?
Even though the planets will look very close in the sky, they are actually very far apart in space. Venus orbits the Sun at about 108 million kilometers from the Sun, while Jupiter is much farther away at about 778 million kilometers. The apparent closeness happens because of a viewing effect called a planetary conjunction.
