Earth is about to gain a rare, temporary companion in space. A small asteroid, named 2024 PT5, will soon orbit Earth for two months, creating a fleeting "mini-moon" starting on 29 September. The asteroid, recently discovered, will remain in orbit until 25 November before continuing its journey through space.
NASA’s Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) first identified 2024 PT5 on 7 August. It is estimated to be around 37 feet in diameter, although further data is required to confirm its exact size. The asteroid's short-lived capture has intrigued astronomers, who will closely observe its unique path.
While many mini-moons visit Earth's orbit every decade, they rarely stay long. In some cases, asteroids can orbit for years, but 2024 PT5 will remain for only a few weeks. This particular space rock belongs to the Arjuna asteroid group, which follows a similar orbit to Earth around the Sun.
Though amateur astronomers won’t be able to view this dim object, professional telescopes will track its size and trajectory. These observations will offer valuable insights into Earth's temporary celestial visitors.
