Annular Solar Eclipse – October 2

On October 2, a stunning ‘ring of fire’ will light up the sky, visible across Easter Island and parts of southern Chile and Argentina, weather permitting. During this event, the moon will cover the sun's centre, leaving its outer edges visible, creating the mesmerizing ring effect. This celestial show is a reminder of the wonders our solar system offers.

Micromoon – October 2

Coinciding with the annular eclipse, the first of two new moons in October is a Micromoon. This phenomenon occurs when the moon is at its farthest point from Earth in its orbit, making it appear smaller than usual. Although it may not be visible during the solar eclipse, it marks an interesting day for lunar observation.

Draconid Meteor Shower – October 8/9

The Draconid meteor shower will peak on the nights of October 8 and 9. The best time to catch a glimpse of these shooting stars is shortly after sunset. This meteor shower is known for producing bright meteors, and conditions should be ideal for stargazers, provided the weather is clear.

Super Hunter's Moon – October 17

On October 17, the full moon will be known as the Hunter's Moon. This year, it will be a supermoon, appearing larger and brighter than a regular full moon. Traditionally, the Hunter's Moon marks the time when hunters would prepare for winter by gathering food. It’s the second and final super full moon of 2024, making it a must-see event.

Orionid Meteor Shower – October 20/21

The Orionid meteor shower is the second meteor shower of the month, peaking around October 20-21. This shower is known for its fast and bright meteors, which are remnants of Halley's Comet. While it peaks during this period, the shower will be active from October 2 until November 7, offering plenty of opportunities for skywatchers to enjoy.

October 2024 promises to be an exciting month for astronomy enthusiasts. With an annular solar eclipse, a Micromoon, two meteor showers, and a supermoon, the sky is set to offer spectacular views. Grab your binoculars, check the weather, and prepare for a month full of celestial wonder. Whether you’re a seasoned astronomer or a casual stargazer, there’s something for everyone to enjoy this October.
