NASA and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency are set to provide live coverage of the departure of the uncrewed HTV‑X1 cargo spacecraft from the International Space Station on 6 March 2026. The broadcast will begin at 11:45 a.m. EST, with the spacecraft scheduled to be released at 12 p.m. EST.
HTV‑X1: Japan’s Workhorse in Space
Launched in October 2025, HTV‑X1 delivered approximately 12,000 pounds of supplies, scientific experiments and hardware to the ISS. The spacecraft has supported dozens of ongoing experiments while providing critical cargo to astronauts aboard the station.
What Is the Latest Update on HTV‑X1?
The uncrewed HTV‑X1 cargo spacecraft has completed its primary mission which was to deliver scientific supplies to ISS. NASA and JAXA are now preparing for its departure from the ISS on 6 March 2026. After leaving the station, HTV‑X1 will remain in orbit for over three months, serving as a platform for JAXA experiments.
What will happen to HTV‑X1 during departure?
During departure, NASA flight controllers will use the Canadarm2 robotic arm to detach HTV‑X1 from the Harmony module’s Earth-facing port. Astronaut Chris Williams will monitor systems to ensure a smooth undocking and safe release into orbit.
Once its mission concludes, the spacecraft will be commanded to re-enter Earth’s atmosphere, safely burning up while disposing of several thousand pounds of trash.
When and Where Is the Departure Taking Place?
The departure will take place on 6 March 2026 from International Space Station which is orbiting Earth at 400 km altitude. The live coverage of this departure will begin from 11:45 a.m. EST. At 12:00 p.m. EST, HTV‑X1 will be released. See this live event on NASA’s official YouTube channel will stream the event live.
How Do NASA and Japan View This Collaboration?
Both NASA and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency view HTV‑X1 as a successful example of international cooperation in space logistics.
For NASA, HTV‑X1 represents a dependable cargo delivery system that supports ongoing science and crew needs aboard the ISS.
For JAXA, it showcases Japan’s capability to design, build and operate advanced cargo spacecraft including opportunities for scientific experiments hosted on HTV‑X1 after departure.
