Justin Trudeau’s announcement to step down as Canada Prime Minister is no real surprise to anyone. In sharp contrast to US President-elect Donald Trump’s tariff threats and taunts aimed at Trudeau, outgoing President Joe Biden expressed his appreciation for the Canadian leader.

Biden expressed his appreciation for Justin Trudeau as the Canadian Prime Minister on Monday announced plans to step down. According to a statement released by the White House, Biden spoke with Trudeau on Tuesday.

How Biden responded to Trudeau's resignation

"Over the last decade, Prime Minister Trudeau has led with commitment, optimism, and strategic vision. The U.S.-Canada alliance is stronger because of him. The American and Canadian people are safer because of him. And the world is better off because of him," Biden wrote in the statement on Tuesday.

Together, we’ve tackled some of the toughest issues our nations faced in decades, from the COVID-19 pandemic, to climate change, to the scourge of fentanyl. We’ve stood together with the people of Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression to defend our nations’ most sacred value: freedom," he wrote.

"I am proud to call him my friend. And I will be forever grateful for his partnership and leadership," he added.

How Trump responded

Trump, 78, who never had a good relationship with Trudeau even during his first term from 2017-2021, wasted no time responding to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's announcement of his resignation, bringing up his long-standing suggestion that Canada should join the United States as the "51st state."

“Many people in Canada LOVE being the 51st State. The United States can no longer suffer the massive Trade Deficits and Subsidies that Canada needs to stay afloat. Justin Trudeau knew this, and resigned,” Mr. Trump said on Truth Social.

“If Canada merged with the US, there would be no Tariffs, taxes would go way down, and they would be TOTALLY SECURE from the threat of the Russian and Chinese Ships that are constantly surrounding them. Together, what a great Nation it would be!!!” said the president-elect after the resignation of Trudeau on Monday.
