Bangladesh's military said it would lift a curfew imposed to quash protests at dawn Tuesday, hours after it seized power following the ouster of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

"Offices, factories, schools, colleges... will be open" from 6:00 am Tuesday (0000 GMT), the military said in a statement.

"PM Hasina's violent reaction to legitimate protests made her continued rule untenable. I applaud the brave protestors & demand justice for those killed," Schumer posted on social media platform X.

"It's critical to establish a balanced interim government that respects the rights of all & sets up democratic elections swiftly," the Democratic senator added.

Hasina's son and former official adviser Sajeeb Wazed Joy said that she will not make a political comeback and that she left the country for her own safety on her family's insistence. In an interview to Newshour on the BBC World Service, Joy said his mother was "disappointed" that after all her hard work and turning Bangladesh around, "for a minority to rise up against her".

The European Union on Monday called for an "orderly and peaceful" transition to democratic rule in Bangladesh, after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled protests and the military took over.

"The EU calls for calm and restraint. It is vital that an orderly and peaceful transition towards a democratically elected government is ensured, in full respect of human rights and democratic principles," EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said.

On current situation in Bangladesh, Meghalaya Deputy CM Prestone Tynsong today said, "Today evening, I called an urgent meeting on seeing the situation of Bangladesh. State Chief Secretary, DGP, IG of BSF were present in the meeting. Today, we decided to impose curfew all along the international border with Bangladesh from tonight. This curfew will be implemented only upto 200 meters inside the Indian territory from the zero point or from the international border pillar from 6 pm to 6 am everyday until the situation is improved."

At least 56 people were killed during violent unrest in Bangladesh on Monday as the prime minister was ousted, police and doctors said, updating an earlier toll.

At least 44 of the dead were brought to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital, an AFP correspondent said, reporting all had bullet wounds. Police said 11 others were killed elsewhere in the capital, and another in the port city of Chittagong.

Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Monday said India cannot afford to be indifferent to the developments and asserted that peace and progress in the neighbouring country is "in our interest".

Reacting to the developments in Bangladesh, Tharoor said, "It is very worrying, as you know some 300 lives have been lost since July 1 when the problem started...that has already been a matter of grave concern to all of us." "Bangladesh is our neighbouring country and the people there are our own brothers and sisters or cousins at the very least and what happens there, effects our neighbourhood in a very intimate way. Bangladesh is a country surrounded by India from three sides...so that is an extremely important concern," the former minister of state for external affairs told PTI.

At least 20 people were killed during violence in the Bangladeshi capital as protesters stormed buildings after the prime minister was ousted on Monday, a police officer told AFP.

"We've got 20 bodies here," said Bacchu Mia, a police inspector at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, without giving details of their deaths, although witnesses and other police officers reported mobs launching revenge attacks on rival groups.

Indian security agencies are monitoring a C-130 aircraft with call sign AJAX1431 since 10 kms from Indian border with Bangladesh and it is heading towards Delhi. It is believed that Sheikh Hasina and some members of her entourage are on this plane, according to news agency ANI citing sources

LIC announced that its office in Bangladesh will remain closed from August 5 to August 7 due to the ongoing socio-political unrest. Born in Dhaka in 1966, he is married to Sarahnaz Kamalika Zaman, the daughter of General Muhammad Mustafizur Rahman, who was army chief from 1997 to 2000.

Zaman holds a Masters degree in Defence Studies from the National University of Bangladesh and a Master of Arts in Defence Studies from King's College, London, according to the Bangladesh Army website.
