A year after Hamas's surprise attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, the Israeli military's campaign in the Gaza Strip has resulted in thousands of casualties and displaced millions. As we are about to mark one year since these attacks, international efforts to broker a peace agreement have failed to yield lasting results. Tensions remain elevated, heightening concerns about a potential broader conflict involving Iran and Hezbollah.

Here’s a recap of the key developments over the past year:

October 7, 2023: Hamas launches a massive surprise attack on Israel, killing 1,205 people, mostly civilians. Hamas takes 251 hostages back to Gaza, some of whom are later found dead. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu declares war on Hamas and vows to destroy Hamas.

October 13, 2023: Israel begins a bombing campaign in Gaza and tightens its siege, instructing civilians in northern Gaza to move south.

October 27, 2023: Israel begins a ground offensive in Gaza, prompting mass displacement.

November 15, 2023: Israeli troops raid Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza, alleging it houses a Hamas command center.

November 24, 2023: A temporary truce between Israel and Hamas leads to a hostage exchange. Hamas releases 80 Israeli hostages in exchange for 240 Palestinians held by Israel.

February 29, 2024: Gaza's health ministry reports that 120 civilians are killed by Israeli forces while rushing towards food aid. Israel claims the soldiers believed the individuals "posed a threat."

Early March 2024: Various countries begin airdropping aid into Gaza to address the humanitarian crisis.

March 15, 2024: The first aid ship, sent from Cyprus, arrives in Gaza as part of international relief efforts.

April 1, 2024: Seven aid workers from the U.S. charity World Central Kitchen are killed in an Israeli airstrike. The Israeli military later calls it a "tragic mistake."

April 13, 2024: Iran launches drones and missiles at Israel in retaliation for a strike on its consulate in Damascus.

May 7, 2024: Israel's military offensive targets Rafah, southern Gaza, taking control of the Egyptian border.

July 13, 2024: Hamas military leader Mohammed Deif is killed in a strike on southern Gaza.

July 20, 2024: Israel retaliates against Huthi rebels in Yemen after a drone attack on Tel Aviv. Israeli-Hezbollah clashes intensify along the Israel-Lebanon border.

July 27, 2024: A rocket attack in the Golan Heights kills 12 children. Hezbollah denies responsibility.

July 30, 2024: An Israeli strike kills Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr in Beirut. The next day, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh is killed in Iran, with Israel allegedly responsible.

August 16, 2024: The United States presents a truce deal to Israel and Hamas. Hamas immediately rejects the proposal.

August 22, 2024: Truce negotiations mediated by Egypt and Qatar resume, seeking a resolution to the conflict.

August 25, 2024: Israel reports thwarting a large-scale Hezbollah attack with air strikes into Lebanon. Hamas claims responsibility for launching hundreds of rockets and drones at Israel in response.

August 28, 2024: Israel launches an operation in the West Bank against Palestinian militants. UN calls for an immediate halt.

September 17-18, 2024: Explosions kill dozens of Hezbollah members in Lebanon, as Israel expands its war aims to secure its northern border. Thousands of Hezbollah members' pagers and walkie-talkies explode across Lebanon, killing at least 39 people and wounding almost 3,000.

September 27, 2024: An Israeli strike kills Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and an Iranian general in Beirut. Iran vows retaliation.

October 1, 2024: Iran retaliates with missile strikes on Israel following the deaths of Hezbollah’s Hassan Nasrallah and Hamas’s Ismail Haniyeh.
