In a world where creativity often comes at a premium, Prada has managed to redefine the ordinary with a sterling silver creation that has left many perplexed. For the princely sum of Rs 33,540 (370 Euros), you can now eschew the banality of mundane office supplies and instead invest in a paperclip-shaped money. With dimensions of 6.25 cm in length and 2.25 cm in width, Prada's creation has not been accepted kindly by the internet.
Branded with the Prada logo, the paper clip caught social media’s attention with many expressing absolute shock at the pricing of a menial stationery object.
“If you ever feel stupid, just remember someone spent $400 on a Prada Engraved Paperclip,” one user wrote.
“If you buy the Prada paperclip I will rob you,” wrote another.
A third said: "I'd never pay so much for a paperclip, even if it's made of silver and branded by Prada. it's just too much for such a simple item."
In the world of designer accessories, Prada's paperclip is not an outlier. The fashion industry has long reveled in reimagining familiar objects with a touch of elegance and humor.
Jil Sander's coated-paper "Vasari" bag in 2012, priced at £185 (Rs 19,516), cleverly transformed an everyday paper bag into a rain-resistant luxury item. Anya Hindmarch's leather stickers, Ashish's sequin-embellished carrier bags, and Supreme's logoed $30 (Rs 2500) red clay brick all attest to the trend of turning the ordinary into the extraordinary.
Christopher Kane introduced $30 (Rs 2500) neon cable ties in mint, cobalt, and lilac during the spring/summer 2016 catwalk. Serving as both hairbands and chokers, these seemingly mundane items became instant hits, combining functionality with a quirky sense of humour.
Balenciaga has added to the trend greatly when it comes to buying quirky items with a staggering price tag. A trash bag and a towel skirt from Balenciaga priced at sky-touching prices were slammed for their ridiculous design. Iconic French brand Louis Vuitton also recently launched a “Sandwich Bag” crafted from cowhide leather, retailing at an eye-watering Rs 2,80,000.
