Dubai taxi driver hands over lost wallet, police track owner in under an hour

A social media post recounting a lost wallet in Dubai has gone viral on social media, drawing praise for the city’s systems and sparking comparisons with similar experiences in India. The post, shared by 23-year-old trader Alok Tiwari, quickly went viral, with users weighing in on honesty, law enforcement and civic behaviour.

In his X post, Tiwari described how he misplaced his wallet in a Dubai cab and didn’t even get around to filing a complaint. To his surprise, the taxi driver who gave him a ride handed the wallet over to the police. They later tracked him down in under an hour and when he checked its contents, only 20 dirhams were missing, despite the wallet containing 500 dirhams. Tiwari wrote that he later realised the missing amount was likely just the taxi fare, calling the experience a lesson in honesty and system efficiency.

The post triggered a flood of responses, with several users sharing similar stories from Dubai. One user recalled forgetting a mobile phone in a cab near Dubai Mall and getting it back within minutes after calling the device, adding that the driver charged only the fare and refused more until tipped. Another user said authorities helped recover a phone lost late at night, even though they had no details of the taxi taken.

Some responses also pointed to strict enforcement as a deterrent, with one comment noting that the fear of severe punishment discourages theft.  At the same time, others offered balancing perspectives by sharing instances of honesty back in India. One user said that losing a wallet at a tourist spot in Goa, only to be contacted days later by local police after a stranger had handed it in, with all contents intact. He even told that he asked cops to help him trace the good Samaritan who returned his wallet but that went in vain.
