Hou Zhuoni Hermione was a project sourcing manager with Meta for over three years and it was close to her third work anniversary in the company when she was laid off.
Hired by the tech giant during the pandemic, the Singapore resident said that she was lucky and "felt pampered and cared for" by the company, but Meta wasn't her dream company, Google was. And five months after being laid off, she received a job offer from them.
"Some of you might have heard me joking about Google being my dream company because the commute would be a less-than-15-min walk. Well, the dream is coming true except the commute is a 16+ hour flight instead," Hermione wrote, sharing the good news on LinkedIn.
She will be joining the tech giant as a regional commodity manager for EMEA, based in Dublin, Ireland.
"This almost feels like the first time I went overseas, and I’m happy to fit into the same shoes as when I was 20. I shall try my best, and this will be fun," she added.
While she awaits her joining date, Hermione will be spending her days with elliptical machines, weights, swimming, and fencing.
Meanwhile, Meta is planning to lay off employees in the unit of its metaverse-oriented Reality Labs division focused on creating custom silicon. Employees were informed in a post on the company's internal discussion forum Workplace on Tuesday they would be notified about their status with the company by early Thursday morning, a source told Reuters.
