Travelling by train is meant to be a shared, safe experience for passengers of all ages. Indian Railways has clear rules to ensure order on board, including strict regulations around alcohol. Despite this, a recent incident has sparked attention online.
A man travelling by train with his family was allegedly seen drinking alcohol on board. A fellow passenger recorded the incident, showing the man attempting to hide a container, which appeared to hold liquor. Reportedly, his mother‑in‑law intervened and asked others to forgive the man.
The video, shared on social media platform X, shows another passenger approaching the man and asking, “What is this brother? What are you doing? Should you drink alcohol while travelling in the train?”
Attention then shifted to the man’s mother‑in‑law, who was asked, “What is this mother? Is he with you?” She replied, “Please forgive us.” The person recording addressed the man again, “Don’t drink alcohol on the train. When you reach home, only then drink alcohol. Not here.”
The video caption read, “The son‑in‑law is drinking booze right there on the train, and when questions are being asked, the mother‑in‑law is defending him.”

Many users online criticised the family. One wrote, “There are small children around too, he should feel ashamed.” Another commented, “When the law is broken, relationships don’t matter, accountability matters. There’s no excuse for a mistake, teaching him a lesson is necessary (sic).” A third said, “They are committing a very serious crime.”
Drinking alcohol on trains or railway property is prohibited in India. Section 145 of the Railways Act, 1989, makes it an offence to be intoxicated or to cause a disturbance on any railway carriage or premises. Those found breaking the law can face a fine or imprisonment of up to six months.
Section 165 of the same Act allows railway officials to search passengers and confiscate unauthorised items, including alcohol. In practice, most trains do not permit passengers to consume alcohol in any form.
