For all the experimentation, global influences, and hyperlocal discoveries that defined India’s food story in 2025, one truth held steady -- the nation’s unwavering love for biryani. According to Swiggy’s 10th edition of How India Swiggy’d, users ordered a staggering 93 million biryanis this year--proving that some classics aren’t just timeless, they’re unstoppable.
Spread across long workdays, midnight binges, and festive gatherings, biryani continued to anchor Indian appetites with unmatched consistency. The numbers are astonishing: 194 biryani orders per minute, or 3.25 plates every second. Chicken biryani remained the hero of this universe, clocking 57.7 million orders and leading the repeat-order charts--an indicator of both loyalty and habit woven deeply into everyday life.
Last year, Swiggy received 83 million biryani orders -- that's roughly 2 biryanis every second. "With a decade-long record of being the favourite, Biryani continued to reign supreme!" the Swiggy report stated. "With 93 million biryanis ordered in 2025, (that's 194 orders per minute or 3.25 biryanis every second), Biryani is the undisputed King, proving that while trends may come and go, India's deep-rooted love for this aromatic masterpiece remains constant."
Beyond the big bowl
While biryani dominated the main course, India’s dining patterns highlighted a broader shift in food behaviour. Burgers (44.2 million orders) and pizzas (40.1 million orders) followed as close favourites, signalling a balance of tradition and fast-food comfort. The popularity of meals like veg dosa (26.2 million orders) showcased how regional staples continue to command national affection.
A vibrant snacking culture flourished between 3–7 pm, where burgers led the pack, and the chai‑samosa ritual held strong with millions of orders. Dessert cravings painted an equally indulgent picture: White chocolate cake took the top spot with 6.9 million orders, while beloved desi sweets like gulab jamun, kaju barfi, and besan ladoo reminded India of its sugar-soaked nostalgia.
What fuelled the appetite
Dinner continued to be India’s most powerful mealtime—32 percent higher than lunch orders—reflecting changing routines and a preference for end‑of‑day indulgence. Quick-delivery formats, hyperlocal cuisine discovery, and new convenience tools on the Swiggy app made ordering easier, faster, and more instinctive than ever.
