Many public spaces across India have areas specifically reserved for women, aimed at ensuring safety, comfort, and privacy. However, a recent viral video has reignited debate around civic sense and rule enforcement after showing a man occupying a space meant exclusively for women at a railway station.
Here is the video
The video was recorded and shared online by a foreign tourist, who was filming her surroundings at an Indian railway station. While panning her camera across the platform, she focused on a “Women Only” waiting lounge, drawing attention to a man sitting alone inside the designated area. The man appeared relaxed, scrolling on his phone, seemingly unbothered by the signage that clearly marked the space as reserved for women.
In the clip, the tourist expressed concern over how a man could be seen using a facility meant solely for women, questioning the seriousness with which such rules are followed. The video quickly gained traction on social media, triggering a wider conversation on respect for women’s spaces in public infrastructure.
As the video spread, social media users shared sharply divided opinions. One user who reposted the clip wrote, “A foreign woman recorded a man sitting in the ‘Women Only’ zone and posted the video on Instagram. What’s the point of making rules if they aren’t enforced?” The comment echoed a common sentiment questioning whether designated spaces serve any purpose without strict implementation.
Others strongly supported the tourist’s decision to highlight the issue. “Sitting in a women-only zone isn’t just breaking a rule. It’s about ignoring safety and basic respect. Calling it out is absolutely justified,” another user commented, stressing the importance of maintaining boundaries in shared public spaces.
However, not everyone agreed. Some users argued that the reaction was unnecessary, pointing out that the waiting lounge appeared empty at the time. “It was vacant, so what’s the harm? He was just sitting there,” one comment read, while another suggested that authorities should consider creating men-only waiting areas to avoid such conflicts altogether.
A separate section of users shifted the focus away from the individual and toward systemic issues. “India needs a separate workforce to actually enforce these rules. Just putting up boards isn’t enough,” a user remarked, highlighting what many see as a persistent gap between policy and practice.
