In a controversial move, James Fishback, a Republican Candidate for Florida governor in 2026, has proposed a 50% “sin tax” on OnlyFans earnings, labelling the platform immoral and harmful.  He said the tax could prevent young women from selling adult content and generate millions for the state services. The proposal has triggered debate about digital labour, ethics, and the limits of state taxation.

"It is called a 'sin tax' because it is a sin, number one, but the purpose of the sin tax in economics is to disincentivise and deter a behaviour," Fishback told NXR Studios.

According to Fishback, OnlyFans is an ‘’online degeneracy platform”. He said that taxing OnlyFans is likely raise around $200 million (nearly Rs 1,800 crore). He claims that the revenue could be used to increase teachers’ salaries and to improve school meals.

He also suggested appointing a “mental health czar" for men, saying that exposure to such content affects young men and society.

"As Florida governor, I don't want young women who could otherwise be mothers raising families, rearing children, I don't want them to be selling their bodies to sick men online. And, I don't want young, impressionable men who have strayed from Christ, who have strayed from our Lord and saviour to be told, and to be drawn into lust, and have their entire brain rewired," he added.

Sophie Rain, a leading OnlyFans creator and Florida native, rejected the proposal, calling it a “clout grab" to gain attention. She questioned the morality and basis of the tax, which she views as an empowering and personal choice, and warned that high taxes could drive creators out of Florida.

“Florida is OnlyFans central. You are just going to drive them out of the state, then what? Fishback is going to go after a group of people who work very hard for their money, just because he himself is against it, is wrong. I feel like it’s also a constitutional violation,” she said.

Sophie Rain said that no one ever forced her to join OnlyFans. “I don’t need a 31-year-old man telling me I can’t sell my body online. I am a Christian, God knows what I am doing, and I know He is happy with me, that’s the only validation I need," Rain told the publication.

Legal experts have questioned whether Fishback’s OnlyFans plan is unconstitutional, since Florida prohibits personal income tax, and could face court challenges. Critics also argue that it unfairly targets those who already pay federal tax.
