New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Sunday publicly criticised the United States’ military action in the Middle East, describing it as an “illegal war of aggression” and asserting that ordinary Americans were opposed to yet another overseas conflict.
In a strongly worded post on X, Mamdani said the strikes on Iran, carried out jointly by the US and Israel, represented a dangerous escalation. He accused the two allies of bombing cities, causing civilian deaths and opening a new front of war, while ignoring domestic priorities. According to him, Americans were more concerned about rising living costs and wanted peace, not regime-change wars.
Today’s military strikes on Iran — carried out by the United States and Israel — mark a catastrophic escalation in an illegal war of aggression. Bombing cities. Killing civilians. Opening a new theater of war. Americans do not want this. They do not want another war in pursuit…— Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani (@NYCMayor) February 28, 2026
Mamdani's X post triggers backlash
The statement, however, triggered a wave of sharp backlash online, with several users accusing the mayor of oversimplifying the situation and ignoring the suffering of Iranians under their own government. One commenter claimed that Iranian-Americans in New York were safe and even celebrating, arguing that the real victims were people inside Iran who had lived for decades under repression.
Others used sarcasm to mock Mamdani’s focus on affordability, with one user questioning whether foreign policy commentary was more urgent than fixing basic civic issues like housing or public infrastructure in New York City. Another criticised the mayor for remaining silent on Iran’s alleged regional actions, including drone threats in the Gulf, while condemning US military involvement.
Some responses took a more personal turn. A user urged Mamdani to speak directly with Iranian-American constituents to understand their perspective, suggesting his views were driven by religious solidarity rather than facts. Another accused him of failing in routine city governance from garbage collection to snow removal, while weighing in on international conflicts “unasked for.”
The White House said the US actions were aimed at protecting its national security and regional stability, not at targeting the Iranian people, and reiterated that it did not seek regime change through prolonged conflict. US officials also warned against escalation
