'If you're in your 20s, you want to be in office to get promoted', says former Google CEO

When I was a young executive, I knew nothing of what I was doing,” Eric Schmidt remarked. 'I literally was just lucky to be there, and I learned by hanging out at the water cooler, going to meetings, hanging out, being in the hallway.'

Google employees were asked to return to the office three days a week in 2022, with attendance linked to performance evaluations in 2023.

Eric Schmidt, who served as Google's CEO from 2001 to 2011, has reignited the debate over remote work versus office-based roles. Speaking on The Diary of a CEO podcast, Schmidt highlighted the importance of physical presence in the workplace, especially for young professionals aspiring to advance in their careers.

“When I was a young executive, I knew nothing of what I was doing,” Schmidt remarked. “I literally was just lucky to be there, and I learned by hanging out at the water cooler, going to meetings, hanging out, being in the hallway.” He stressed that the informal learning and networking opportunities afforded by being in an office environment were critical to his own career progression.

Schmidt asserted, “If you're in your 20s, you want to be in an office because that's how you're going to get promoted.”

Schmidt’s comments align with data indicating a link between office presence and career progression. A study by Live Data Technologies, cited by The Wall Street Journal in January, revealed that fully remote workers were 31% less likely to receive promotions than their hybrid or in-office counterparts.

While Schmidt acknowledged the productivity gains seen in some remote work scenarios, he maintained a preference for in-office operations. “At least for the industries that have been studied, there’s evidence that allowing that flexibility from work from home increases productivity,” he said. “I don’t happen to like it, but I want to acknowledge the science is there.”

Studies have presented mixed findings. Research from Stanford’s Institute for Economic Policy Research in 2023 found that fully remote work reduced productivity by 10% compared to in-office arrangements. However, hybrid work showed no measurable impact on productivity.

Major companies have been revisiting their remote work policies. Firms like Amazon, JPMorgan, and Goldman Sachs have implemented stricter return-to-office mandates, with some tying compliance to performance reviews or employment status.

Meta, which now requires employees to work in-office at least three days per week, justified its policy with internal data. CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated in 2023 that “people who work from home are not efficient, and engineers who come to the office get more work done.”

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman echoed similar views, describing the push for “full remote forever” as one of the tech industry’s “worst mistakes.”

Schmidt has previously shared candid remarks about workplace dynamics. In an April lecture at Stanford University, he linked remote work policies to what he perceived as Google’s diminished competitive edge against AI startups like OpenAI and Anthropic.

“Google decided that work-life balance and going home early and working from home was more important than winning,” he stated, adding, “The reason the startups work is because the people work like hell.”

Though Schmidt later retracted this statement, with his spokesperson clarifying that he had misspoken, the comments added to the growing debate on the role of office work in fostering innovation and maintaining competitiveness.

Google has gradually enforced a hybrid work model. Employees were asked to return to the office three days a week in 2022, with attendance linked to performance evaluations in 2023. However, Google assured employees it would not follow Amazon's lead in requiring five-day office attendance.
