Diwali will be celebrated on Sunday, November 12. To celebrate the auspicious occasion, families decorate their homes with diyas, colourful lights and rangoli. It is a time of the year when families come together, light diyas, exchange gifts and strengthen bonds.
A key tradition to Diwali is the Lakshmi Puja, which is performed in the evening during the Pradosh Kaal. Interestingly, the shubh muhurat to perform the puja varies from the city to city in India.
As per a Hindustan Times report, in the national capital Delhi, the time is between 5:32 pm and 8:00 pm. In Mumbai, it is between 5:14 pm and 8:14 pm. In Kolkata, the shubh muhurat is between 5:17 pm to 7:45 pm.
The shubh muhurat in Bengaluru is between 5:49pm to 8:16 pm and in Chennai it is between 5:52 pm and 8:08 pm.
Lakshmi Puja is performed on the third day of the festival. Govardhan Puja is performed the following day, which is dedicated to Lord Krishna. Legend has it that by lifting a mountain known as "Govardhan", Lord Krishna rescued the residents of Mathura from Lord Indra.
The fifth and final day of Diwali is known as Bhai Dooj, also known as Bhau Beej in states such as Maharashtra. Bhai Dooj celebrates the unique bond that exists between a brother and a sister.
