The Commerce and Industry Ministry is working on a detailed and structured programme with an aim to raise awareness about intellectual property rights (IPRs) in schools and industry, and society in general.

The Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), under the ministry, recently released the new National IPR policy with seven objectives, including creation of public awareness about economic, social and cultural benefits of IPRs among all sections of society.

"This is the most important objective of the policy. The department will go for a detailed and structured programme to achieve this objective. It will be for all stakeholders, including industry, academia, society and judiciary, among others," an official said.

In the next three years, the department will prepare a complete ecosystem to achieve the objective of creating public awareness about IPRs in the country, the official added.

All the industry stakeholders, including chambers and MSME clusters, will be offered a detailed analysis of the new policy. Besides, the department will work with schools to include it in the syllabus.

The official further said DIPP will also soon write to different government departments on the action points on which they have to work in coming months and years.

To increase IPR awareness in the country, the policy is all for launch of a nation-wide and systematic programme of promotion by conveying to all stakeholders its value and benefits.

Last month, the government announced a comprehensive IPR policy, in a move to incentivise entrepreneurship, creativity and innovation and curb manufacturing and sale of counterfeits.
