Sanjeev Saxena, arrested in the 2008 cash-for-votes scam, has claimed that former Samajwadi Party MP Amar Singh gave him the money to bribe some MPs to abstain during the trust vote in 2008, police sources say.
Saxena is the first one to be interrogated and arrested by the Delhi police. He was produced before a Delhi court on Monday and sent to 3-day police custody.
What Saxena told Delhi Police
CNN-IBN has learnt that Saxena has nailed Amar Singh. He told the police that he was working as Amar Singh's secretary for the last three years and that it was Singh who gave him the money to him to bribe the MPs.
Saxena also told the police that Singh's driver Sanjay had gone along with him to deliver the money - a fact corroborated by the 2 BJP MPs Fagan Singh Kulaste and Mahavir Bhagora who have told the Delhi Police that Amar Singh had introduced Sanjeev Saxena as his secretary.
While being silent today, Amar Singh however has maintained that Saxena wasn't his employee at all.
"He works for Arun Jaitley," Amar Singh had said.
The issue is already snowballing into a political crisis with the BJP and Congress trading charges.
"There should be a complete investigation into this," said BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad.
"The investigation is going on in this matter and it is not appropriate to do any kind of speculation," said Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari.
Amar singh will now have to answer some tough questions. The police will want to know whether he sent the entire sum of one crore rupees himself or was there another contributor and also whether there was someone at the top who gave the go ahead.
Saxena was earlier remanded to three days in police custody by the Tis Hazari Court in New Delhi on Monday. Saxena was produced in the court by the Delhi Police which had arrested him on Sunday. He has been charged under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
The police pleaded with the court for Saxena's custody saying that they need to find out the source of fund used during the cash-for-votes scam.
