The Delhi High court will be hearing the bail plea of DMK Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi and that of 5 others accused in the 2G spectrum scam on Monday. The arguments on the matter could not be concluded on Friday.
All six accused had approached the court after the Supreme Court granted bail to five corporate executives on November 23. The Delhi High Court had observed that just because the apex court had given bail to five accused didn't mean that there should be walk over for the other accused. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is likely to put forward its arguments in the court on Monday. It had already conceded bail to Kanimozhi and Cineyug founder Karim Morani in the trial court. The five others seeking bail on Monday are Karim Morani, Kalaignar TV's MD Sharath Kumar, Kusegaon directors Asif Balwa and Rajeev Agarwal and former Telecom Secretary Siddharth Behura. In her last statement before the court when she was sent to judicial custody in the 2G scam on May 20, Kanimozhi said that she is not a soft target and since then her focus has been getting bail. The court, however, did not entertain her bail plea till charges were framed in the 2G spectrum allocation case by the CBI.That meant that she had to spend the last five months including Diwali in prison. Her father, the DMK Chief M Karunanidhi, has already made two trips to Delhi to meet her. In the second trip, just ahead of Diwali, he met his ally Sonia Gandhi for the first time since Kanimozhi's arrest. The meeting between the two leaders resulted in speculation that it was his last effort to get bail for his daughter."Kanimozhi is determined, even if she is looking weak she is very confident," Karunanidhi said.Sources that except the DMK chief others within Karunanidhi's family have not backed Kanimozhi. Elder brother and union minister Alagiri is seen as being against her and MK Stalin has been indifferent.Senior party leaders hope that bail for Kanimozhi could pave the way for the DMK retaking the Cabinet berths vacated by the resignation of A Raja and Dayanidhi Maran. They, however, concede that for the moment Karunanidhi is not interested in retaking the berths.Despite the ostensible statements of solidarity from the party, it's clear that Kanimozhi will have to fight the political and legal battle on her own.
