Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav surrendered to Tihar Jail authorities on February 5, 2026, after the Delhi High Court refused to extend his deadline to repay dues linked to a longstanding cheque-bounce case. The HC’s refusal left the actor with no option but to report to jail to serve his sentence, which date back to convictions in several dishonoured cheque cases.
Rajpal Yadav’s legal troubles stem from a loan he took in 2010 — reportedly around Rs 5 crore — to finance his directorial project Ata Pata Lapata, which did not perform well commercially.
Cheques issued in connection with the loan bounced, leading to multiple cases under the Negotiable Instruments Act. Over the years, the amount owed, including interest and penalties, has reportedly ballooned to several crores.
Despite making partial payments and providing demand drafts in 2025, Yadav repeatedly failed to fulfil court-ordered repayment undertakings, prompting the Delhi High Court to criticise his conduct and reject his final plea for more time.
The court’s order directed him to surrender before the concerned jail superintendent by the specified deadline, and he complied, reporting to Tihar Jail where he is presently in custody.
As quoted by NewsX, before entering jail, Rajpal Yadav — known for his roles in films such as Chup Chup Ke, Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Hungama and many others — made an emotional statement in which he said, “Sir, kya karoon? Mere paas paise nahin hain. Aur koi upaay nahin dikhta. Sir, yahan hum sab akele hain. There are no friends. I have to deal with this crisis on my own.”
Rajpal Yadav’s surrender came after the Delhi High Court’s repeated refusal to grant relief, despite years of legal proceedings and opportunities to settle the dues, emphasising that compliance with court orders was essential regardless of the litigant’s fame.

The actor now faces six-month jail sentence imposed by the trial court.
On the work front, Rajpal Yadav was last seen in films such as Baby John and Interrogation. He will next appear in Akshay Kumar’s horror-comedy Bhoot Bangla, which is slated for release on April 10.
