2G scam: Cong, BJP fight over JPC membership

The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) into the 2G scam will be formally announced on Tuesday.

The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) into the 2G scam will be formally announced on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will move a motion for the JPC in Rajya Sabha after which the full list of all members - from both houses - will be announced.

Sources have told CNN-IBN that the Congress is likely to object to presence of seniors BJP leaders Yashwant Sinha and Jaswant Singh on that panel citing a conflict of interest.

Congress sources say the two BJP leaders cannot be a part of the panel because they were part of the 2001 GoM on telecom WLL in 2001. The Left is yet to decide its stand on the matter. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh announced the formation of a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) to investigate the multi-crore 2G spectrum scam while addressing the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. Bowing to sustained pressure applied by the Opposition parties led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on the 2G scam issue, Singh made the announcement for setting up the JPC so that the crucial Budget Session is not disrupted.
