For decades, the golden ticket to a high-paying career in tech was simple: learn to code. However, according to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, that playbook is now officially outdated for the next generation of workforce.
Last year, speaking on the Stratechery podcast with Ben Thompson, Altman who famously dropped out of Stanford University after two years revealed what he would do differently if he were entering the workforce today.
“The obvious tactical thing is just get really good at using AI tools,” Altman stated. He drew a direct parallel to his own graduation era, noting, “Like when I was graduating as a senior from high school, the obvious tactical thing was get really good at coding, and this is the new version of that.”
For Indian students and young professionals looking for a direction in this highly competetive and evolving age, this advice signals a major shift in where they should focus their energy to remain employable.
Altman’s advice isn’t just about staying trendy, it’s rooted in the rapid transformation happening inside tech companies right now. According to Altman, AI is already responsible for writing 50% of the code at many organizations.
This reality is echoed by other tech leaders. Earlier this month, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei predicted an even more aggressive timeline, stating that within the next three to six months, AI could be generating 90% of the code produced by software teams.
Rather than replacing engineers entirely, Altman sees this evolution as a move toward "agentic coding"—where AI agents handle repetitive and mundane coding tasks, allowing human developers to focus on more complex problem-solving. This shift democratizes the ability to build software, lowering the barrier to entry for those who can effectively command the AI.
One of the most reassuring aspects of Altman's advice for students is that acquiring this new "superpower" doesn't necessarily require a costly or time-consuming college degree.
As the Indian tech industry continues to boom, the skill sets required for success are evolving. Altman’s message is clear: while traditional coding isn't becoming extinct, the ability to leverage artificial intelligence is quickly becoming the new baseline.
For Gen Z graduates, the path forward involves shifting from being just a coder to being a director of AI—using these powerful tools to build, create and solve problems faster than ever before.
