Jad Tarifi, an artificial intelligence researcher who has spoken about his early work in generative AI at Google and now runs Integral AI, has raised eyebrows with a blunt prediction: the traditional university degree may not keep up with the speed of AI.

In recent remarks, Tarifi suggested that students enrolling today in long programmes such as law, medicine or even PhDs in AI could find that much of what they studied is no longer at the frontier by the time they graduate. That said, the idea that higher education is becoming obsolete is far from settled. Doctors still need licensing. Lawyers still need accreditation. Engineering projects still require accountability and human oversight. AI can assist with analysis, but responsibility and judgment remain human.

What Tarifi’s comments really highlight is a pressure point. Universities were designed around relatively stable bodies of knowledge. AI is not stable. It is iterative, constantly updated and shaped by private research labs as much as academic departments.

Rather than disappearing, higher education may be forced to change faster than it ever has. Shorter programs, modular credentials and closer industry ties are already becoming more common. The debate is less about whether universities vanish and more about whether they can move quickly enough to stay relevant in an AI driven world.
