GPAI Summit: All you need to know about global meet on Artificial Intelligence

The Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence Summit is set to be held from November 12 to November 14 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi

As artificial intelligence and its various applications takes centre stage in governance and industry, the timing of the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence Summit, scheduled to be held in New Delhi from December 12-14 is right. It is expected that the meeting will have significant outcomes in the sectors of responsible AI, AI regulation and so on.

Bharat Mandapam, the convention centre at the revamped Pragati Maidan complex in Delhi, will see participation from over 29 countries including the US, France, Australia, Norway, UK, Finland, Kenya, Ireland, Belgium and Germany.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the summit on December 12, and later delegates are expected to engage in several sessions revolving around AI, Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw said on November 12 while announcing the summit.

As part of the event, the government is working on a multi-country, consensus-based declaration on AI, specifically on ways to mitigate risks and foster innovation.

GPAI or Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence is an initiative involving multiple countries dedicated to AI, specifically towards supporting research in the sector, and for acting as a “global reference point for specific AI issues, and ultimately promoting trust in and the adoption of trustworthy AI”, according to the GPAI website.

“In its first few years, GPAI experts will collaborate across four working groups on the themes of responsible AI (including a subgroup on AI and pandemic response), data governance, the future of work, and innovation and commercialization,” it added.

The GPAI India meet marks the first major event of the alliance’s new council chair, India. The country took over from France as the GPAI council chair in November.

“As the Lead Chair of the GPAI, India reaffirms its commitment to harnessing technology, particularly AI, for the welfare of people, ensuring that nations of the Global South are not the last to reap its benefits. India is dedicated to clearing the path for a regulatory framework that ensures Safe and Trusted AI, bringing all nations together for widespread and enduring implementation,” Modi had said in a blogpost about the summit on LinkedIn.

A booklet on the GPAI Summit prepared by the government says that there will be official meetings for GPAI’s steering committee, executive council, ministerial council and multistakeholder expert group.

Besides, there will be sessions of working groups on Responsible AI, Data Governance, Future of Work and Innovation and Commercialisation.

For instance, GPAI’s working group on Responsible AI looks after projects and frameworks to operationalise AI principles and ethics; mechanisms to mitigate bias, discrimination etc; tools and certifications to evaluate AI, and so on.

As part of the event, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology is also organising the AI Gamechangers Award. The ministry called for applications for the award in November, and a review committee selected the top 10 startups.

They include Areete Business Solutions, a startup focused on addressing needs of Indian dairy farmers with the help of IoT devices; DronaMaps, which provides command and control centre solutions for drone technologies; Genrobotic Innovations, a robotics startup aiming to provide solutions for people with disabilities; Neodocs, which generates instant smartphone-based health tests using AI; NewzGPT, which generates real-time summaries of news articles; Qure, which leverages AI to enhance accessibility to healthcare; Deepcall , whose Naam platform allows users to identify unknown callers without syncing contacts; Tarisa, which offers an AI co-pilot to banks; and KissanAI, an agriculture-focused generative AI startup.

As part of the GPAI Summit, the government is also organising the Global AI Expo, where over 150 startups will highlight their innovations. Big Tech companies such as Microsoft, Google, Amazon Web Services and others will also be present.

For instance, Meta will have on display VR experiences by five startups across use-cases such as defence, skilling and training, healthcare, and accessibility. They will also have presentations by four AI companies on generative AI solutions.

Google intends to showcase AI/ML interventions in the fields of agriculture, sustainability, health and generative AI.

Microsoft, will give a platform to seven startups that have taken its support.

Government entities such as Bhashini and National Informatics Centre are also set to give presentations at the GPAI Summit.

“Bhashini is showcasing one of the world’s largest AI use cases on development of approximately 300 AI models. The highlight of this pavilion will be the Bhashini app—an indigenously developed app by Digital India Bhashini Division enabling users to converse in different languages and convert speech-t0-text,” said the government’s GPAI booklet.
